Purpose: The Senior Director of Retail Design & Implementation is responsible for establishing and maintaining policy and procedure relating to retail facility planning and design, as well as developing internal plan and design standards.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Leads internal Duty Paid design direction during RFP and lease extension proposal development including participation in oral presentations and interviews with clients
  • Develops and implements designs, brand standards, processes, and procedures to reduce capital costs
  • Collaborates with interdepartmental teams, external designers, and architects to streamline processes and procedures to reduce project timelines
  • Works as primary liaison with Global Shop Development and Commercial team on design of all Duty Free retail projects; develops design delivery schedule and communicates to Global Shop Development for successful project implementation.
  • Oversees all Duty Free design development activities post-award until 60% CD completion including transition to regional Project Directors
  • Manages external interior design consultants developing schematic design packages including layouts, renderings, materials boards and design narratives for Duty Paid RFP and lease extension proposals; trains external design partners on retail plan standards, design standards, and Design & Construction procedures/processes
  • Creates and maintains retail plan standards including plan set structure, standardized details, responsibility matrix, and related collateral
  • Creates and maintains retail design standards for fixtures, casework, finishes, signage and related specifications; partners with Commercial and Procurement teams on development
  • Sources and secures external interior design firms. Partners with regional Pre-Construction Directors to source local designers for RFPs and architects for project delivery.
  • Develops project estimates for retail Duty Free and Duty Paid projects; collaborates with Estimating and Procurement teams to establish budget parameters for projects
  • Provides project management support of internal concept finishes, equipment, and operating requirements, as well as support in development and maintenance of new & existing concepts

 

Reporting Relationship: The Senior Director of Retail Design & Implementation reports to the Vice President of Design & Construction

 

Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Work Environment:

  • Education and Experience: The combination of education and professional experience must exceed 10 years:
    • In a leadership role: Requires 5 years of experience leading a senior level team of professionals engaged in developing and executing retail design programs
    • In a technical role: Requires 10 years of design experience engaged in developing and delivering retail design programs with a focus on interior architecture and design build projects
      • A bachelor’s degree in a program related to the functional area can count for 3 of the ten-year requirement
      • An MBA or a master’s level degree in a program related to the functional area can count for an additional 2 years of the ten-year requirement
    • In the industry: 5+ years of Hospitality/Retail experience 
  • Specialized Training:
    • Training that leads to an in-depth knowledge of CAD and graphic software (Adobe Acrobat & Bluebeam)
  • Specialized Skillset/Competencies/Traits:
    • Advanced project management skills to manage multiple projects at varying stages of development and tasks effectively
    • Requires strong analytical skills and excellent business judgment with the ability to communicate persuasively to all levels of management
    • Requires strong oral & written communication and relationship building skills
    • Advanced business acumen and also has the strategic mindset required to understand the long-term implications of retail design decisions and to advance the organization’s goals
    • Demonstrated history of anticipating the needs of the business and complex stakeholders, the employee population and individual circumstances
    • Demonstrated history of creating and maintaining positive work environments through coaching, developing, and leading teams to achieve common goals
    • Demonstrated experience exhibiting a continuous improvement mindset with the ability to optimize work processes and achieve positive results

  • Location/Travel:
    • This role is based at the North America Support Center in Bethesda, Maryland
    • Requires up to 25% travel
